News Update – Cardinal Creek Tree Biodiversity Study of Eight Parks.
We are pleased to report that 6 of 8 Cardinal Creek parks’ trees have been sampled to determine the state of their health thanks to the help of Estelle and Jean Laporte, Naim Ghawi, Sylvain Maheu, Viresh Asokan, myself and other volunteers.
The 6 parks where tree sampling was completed include both Ward 1 (Pine Vista, Varennes, Cassia and Royal Ridge Parks) and Ward 19 (Linda Dunn and Frenette Parks). It should be noted that Linda Dunn Park needs much attention as 2 trees were removed by vandals and the overall health of trees in this park is poor compared to the other Cardinal Creek parks.
Its also interesting to note that many trees are partially dead due to a last of tree guards and whipper snipping. Many mature trees will have to be removed and replanting will be required in all these parks due to various diseases and conditions.
Its been a real eye opener and its been very educational to have tree experts such as Jean and Estelle Laporte with us to explain the various factors that affect the health of trees in our City of Ottawa owned parks.
We will be meeting the week of August 31 (depending on weather and availability) to finish Cardinal Creek Community and Glandriel Parks. For those interested in participating, please send an email to president@cardinalcreek.org.
