In the last 2 billion years the Ottawa Valley has been a huge mountain chain, a tropical beach, habitat for whales and buried under 2 kilometers of Ice? Once again, we invite you to come out and see where the rocks in your backyard fit in!
Join volunteers from Carleton University’s Earth Science Department and the Ottawa Gatineau Geoheritage Project at the Cardinal Creek Karst to learn how geological processes have shaped the local landscape and provided resources for our use.

Traveling east on 174 towards Orleans/Rockland, turn right/south on Trim Road and up to the top of the hill. Turn left on Watters Road and park along Watters. The cave is located on the east side of the bridge. The surroundings of this remarkable and unique karst (cave system) in the east end of Orleans will be open to the public for this event. In 2009 the Province designated the southern portion of the Cardinal Creek karst as an Earth Sciences Area of Natural Scientific Interest (ANSI) (south of Watters Road). The Cardinal Creek Community Association is hoping to bring awareness to this natural feature and work to protect it.
Direction est sur la route 174 vers Orléans/Rockland, tourner à droite/sud à la route Trim et continuer jusqu’en haut de la colline. Tourner à gauche sur la rue Watters où vous pourrez vous stationner le long de la rue. La caverne est situé sur le côté est du pont. Les alentours de cet unique et remarquable formation karstique sera accessible au public pour l’évènement. En 2009, ’Ontario a désigné la portion la plus au sud du ruisseau Cardinal comme Zone d’intérêt naturel et scientifique (ZINS) (au sud de la rue Watters). L’Association Communautaire Cardinal Creek souhaite sensibiliser la population à ce joyau naturel et travaille à sa protection.
